The investigation on lapping grain behaviour that leads to a simulation of lapping process
Abstract:
The mechanisms of the surface formation and the removal rate in lapping are decisively dependent on the nature of motion of individual grains within the lapping removal. Two active natures of motion. namely the rolling and sliding of the individual lapping grains within the working gap relatively to one of the working partners as well as the passive behaviour of the grains can be differentiated , whereby varying surface topographies are generated by active natures of motion at the work piece. These can among others be influenced by a part of the adjustable process parameters. However. the most important parameter is the significant grain form. On this basis, a simulation model for the analysis of the surface formation by the motion of grains is described in the paper, which also considers collisions and break-ups of grains. It enables the quantitative specification of the individual natures of motion of the lapping grains under the influence of different process parameters such as lapping pressure. lapping speed, grain size, grain concentration etc as well as the qualitative estimation these influences have on the processing result
