Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study whether there was a significant difference in the level of job satisfaction between to catalogers and the reference librarians in 12 government university libraries at the .05 level. Besides that each factor of high and low level job satisfaction of those two groups of librarians were included. The research methods used in this thesis were both documentary research through books and other printed materials and 90 questionnaires distributed to the catalogers and reference librarians of 12 central government university libraries. 85 copies (99.44%) were returned. The results of the research were as follows: 1.Only one factor : social service (P<.05) was the aspect in which the reference librarians were more satisfied than the catalogers but social status and working conditions emerged with significant differences. 2.According to the social status aspect, the trend of the reference librarians satisfaction were higher than the catalogers. 3.Regarding working conditions, the trend of the catalogers satisfaction were higher than those of reference librarians. 4.Generally speaking the reference librarians job satisfaction were almost all higher than the catalogers in all aspects, but there were not significant differences. 5.Such factors : co-workers, supervision human relations, achievement, security, ability, and independence, the two groups of librarians were the more satisfied. 6.With regard to the level of high satisfaction, both groups of librarians were similarly satisfied. The first and the last high level of satisfaction were co-workers and independence respectively. 7.Both groups of librarians were unsatisfied with factors such as social status, advancement, compensation, library policy and practices, recognition, and supervision technical. 8.In accordance with the level of unsatisfaction, there was no relationship between the catalogers and the catalogers and the reference librarians because of those two groups were unsatisfied with the aspect of social status at the first level, but the reference librarians and the catalogers were unsatisfied with the working conditions aspect at the second and eleventh level respectively. Recommendations: 1.All library administrators should: 1.1remote and encourage the rotation of library work according to the librarians interest so as to diminish the problem of borromini working the same job all the time. 1.2Improve working conditions and acquire all of the necessary library equipment and modern reference tools of all kinds in order to meet the needs of the reference librarians. 1.3Promote the chance of equivalent advancement for both groups of librarlans. 2.All university administrators should: 2.1promote and improve professional librarians status to be as equal with university-lecturers. 2.2providea larger budget and more financial aid. 3.All library schools should stimulate their students to have and to hold the librarian philosophy, pride, and good attitude of the profession besides teaching and studying. Emphasizing library practice courses is all desirable. The students can learn and understand the routine of all library work directly. So when they might have chosen the job they like most. Working boredom would not occur.
