Abstract:
Purposes : 1.to study the secondary school social studies teachers opinions concerning their roles in educational, vocational and personality development guidance through classroom instructional activities and extra-curricular activities. 2.To compare the opinions concerning the roles in students guidance between social studies teachers with different teaching experiences. Procedures : The sample group was 388 social studies teachers in secondary government schools in Bangkok Metropolis selected by simple random sampling. A setoff questionnaires consisted of three types of question ; check-list, rating scale and open ended question with the reliability of 0.89 was constructed by the researcher and sent to the samples. The obtained data were analyzed by means of percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, t-test, and then presented in tables with description. Results : 1.The social studies teachers opinions concerning their role in educational, vocational and personality development guidance appeared as follows : a)Through classroom instructional activities ; the majority of social studies teachers highly agreed that they should perform all types of activities except the Cooperative activities which most of them agreed moderately that they encourage their students to make decision and choose career by themselves by taking the students to visit successful Cooperative Stores in their communities in order to get guidelines for their vocation. b)Through extra-curricular activities ; most teachers highly agreed that they should perform almost all types of activity except some academic activities which they agreed moderately that they should perform such as inviting resource person, discussion or debate, field trip, and demonstration of academic work, and setting up student body or students activity club as a coordinating center distributing information and knowledge. The teachers should take the students to visit and practice in various career resource places in the community, and should contact psychologists or social workers in order to help the students attain good mental health. 1.On comparing the opinions concerning social studies teachers roles in educational, vocational and personality development guidance between social studies teachers with 1-14 years of teaching experiences and those with 15 pears of teaching experiences, it appeared as follows : a)Through classroom instructional activities ; the opinions concerning the social studies roles in guidance in all areas; educational, vocational and personality development were not different at the 0.04 level of significance. But on comparing their opinions in detail, it appeared that there was a significant difference at the 0.01 level concerning the following items :the teachers should make the students understand the supplementary suggestions in each lesson, the teachers should use psychological and guidance techniques to help the students realize the values of social learning, the teacher and students should set up study plan together by integrating the way of thinking reasonably and guiding the students to acquire knowledge by themselves and conclude the knowledge in each lesson correctly. The teachers should tell the students about the values and importance of the subject so that they find out the students interest, aptitudes in order to guide them the subject and career selection. Concerning personality development through teaching social studies for good conduct towards the elders, the teachers should tell them the principles and guidelines through demonstration and dramatization illustration by teachers behavior and integration of how to maintain the school disciplines and standards. The teachers should inform the students about nation and international current situations so that they understand their duties of good citizenship. At the end of each semester, the teachers should reinforce by rewards or praise, inform the students of their weak points and suggestions for improvement. b) Through extra-curricular activities; it appeared that the opinions of both groups of teachers were not different at level of significance of concerning all aspects. But on comparing their opinions in detail, they were significantly different at the 0.01 level on the following items ; the academic activities such as inviting resource persons to the school students practice on project writing including project objectives, working process and coordinating with other organization. Moreover, the teachers should integrate the information concerning toughness, work concept, discipline, cleanliness and responsibility as well.
