A comparison of fundamental mathematics achievement of students at higher certificate of education level with different levels of expectation and different methods of feedback
Abstract:
The purpose of this study were to compare fundamental mathematics achievement among Higher Certificate of Education students receiving different types of feedback, and with different levels of expectation. The (data) were collected through the use of an entrance examination mathematics test, a questionnaire on students grade expectation, an achievement test on fundamental mathematics, and a feedback form. These instruments were developed by researcher. The subjects consisted of 120 first year students, 35 of which were males and 85 females. The experiment took place in Petchburi-Vithayalongkorn Teacher College. The subjects were devided into four groups, each of which received a type of feedback. Four kinds of feedback were studies : no-feedback, grade only, grade and test explanation, and grade and positive comments. The statistical analysis made use of the ANOVA and the Tukeys multiple comparison test. The results were as follows: 1.Students in grade-only grade as well ad those grade and positive comments group performed better in mathematics than those in no-feedback group. 2.There were no significant difference in mathematics achievement between grade-only and no feedback groups of students. 3.Within the group of higher expectation students those with grade and test explanation type of feedback did be better in mathematics than those with no feedback. But no significant differences were found with lower expectation students, regardless of types of feedback used.
