Using unscripted role play to improve speaking ability of EFL Thai students
Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate the effects of using unscripted role play to improve speaking ability of EFL Thai students of Tapee University, Muang District, Surathani. The research participants of the study comprised 13 fourth year students who made full attendance of English for Communication 2 Course. They were selected from their low English scores of the previous course and their needs to improve oral English skill, a key element for students to gain better jobs after graduation. The study was conducted within ten weeks or one semester of 1/2011 academic year with a focus of using ten different unscripted role play situations known as free role play. This study utilized a mixed-methods approach, by combining both quantitative data and qualitative data and was devoted to one group pretest-posttest design. In this study, the researcher used the pretest and posttest, speaking evaluation forms, questionnaires with open-ended questions and classroom observation to get the data. The research tools included 10 role play activities. The data were analyzed and presented by a descriptive analysis including narration. The results revealed that the posttest mean was higher than the pretest mean of the students. The mean score of students speaking fluency, pronunciation accuracy, and appropriate language use after the course was higher than that before the course. The students improved speaking ability by situations given during unscripted role play activities. At the end of the course, the students were able to speak with few pauses and hesitation. They also spoke with acceptable stress, final sounds and intonation. They used mostly
appropriate language to convey the right language situation. They could act out while speaking with improved fluency, pronunciation accuracy and appropriate language use. Furthermore, the study showed that this teaching technique could empower the students to communicate independently, make the students feel comfortable during discussing any topics, and foster interaction with one another. Student satisfaction was positively associated with unscripted role play.
