Abstract:
Purpose of the Study The purpose of this research was as follows: 1. To study the opinions of instructors and students towards the teaching behaviors important for teaching and actual teaching behaviors. 2. To compare the opinions of the instructors and of the students on the behaviors important for teaching. 3. To compare teaching behaviors as evaluated by instructors with varying number of years of experience with regard to the behaviors important for teaching and actual teaching behaviors. Procedures The sample included instructors and students of five physical education colleges during the second semester of the academic year 1982. The five Physical Education Colleges were Chiangmai, Udornthani, Yala, Angthong, and Chonburi . Questionnaires were sent to a total of 642 subjects : 590 (91.90 percent ) questionnaires were returned. The research instrument for this study was two different forms: one for instructors, and one for students. Each form included two parts : the first part asked about personnel data and the second part asked opinions on behaviors important for teaching and on actual teaching behaviors. The researcher also constructed a direct observation schedule in order to support their opinions in the questionnaires. The data were analyzed by computing percentages, means, and standard deviations. Differences between the various groups were evaluated through the t test. Research Findings 1. Instructors and students, in general, gave a high rating for behaviors important for teaching. The instructors and the students opinions on actual teaching behaviors were quite different; the instructors gave a high rating on all aspects of behaviors while the other aspects were rated as average. These four aspects were : personality, teaching practice, discipline in studying , and relationship between instructors and students. The other five aspects were : space and equipment utilization, teaching philosophy, assignment, learning reinforcement, and evaluation and feedback 2. Comparisons of the two groups as to behaviors important for teaching showed differences significant at the .05 level on six aspects; space and equipment utilization, teaching philosophy, teaching practice, learning reinforcement, evaluation and feedback, and discipline in studying. The other aspects did not show significant differences. 3. Comparisons of teaching behaviors as evaluated by instructors with few years of experiences and by instructors with many years of experiences as to behaviors important for teaching and actual teaching behaviors did not show any significant difference for any of the various aspects. Recommendations 1. Administrators and instructors should consider improving the teaching behaviors according to what the instructors and the students feel is important. Those behaviors are ; the instructors have much knowledge, be on time for teaching, demonstrate and give clear example, and aware in students responsibility. 2. Instructors should improve their teaching behaviors by doing more often than usual. Those behaviors are ; the instructors prepare adequate equipment utilization, encourage the students to debate, admire the students, and let them choose the appropriate assignments. 3. Physical education colleges should promote further development among the instructors by encouraging to undergo further training or participating in workshop and seminars. Such further knowledge and experience should be used to bring greater efficiency in teaching.
