Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study the assertive behavior of the student-teachers. The subjects were 200 male and 240 female students who were studying in the last year of the certificate of high education level in 1978, and randomly selected from 3 Bangkok metropolis and 3 other provincial teachers colleges. Assertive behavior was assessed by the Assertion Inventory. It was hypothesized that (1) the students in Bangkok metropolis were more assertive than the students in other provinces; (2) male students were more assertive than female students. Statistical methods used for data analyses were t-test and percentage. The results indicated that (1) the students in Bangkok Metropolis were significantly more assertive than the students in other provinces, which supported the hypothesis; (2) male and female students were not significantly different in assertiveness; (3) assertive students were only 25 per cent, the rest were nonassertive; and (4) situations which the students would like to be more assertive in the first 3 choices were: to ask the person who annoying them in a public situation to stop, to turn down a request to borrow valuables, and to initiate a conversation with a stranger.
