Abstract:
Purposes of the study : The specific objectives of this study were: 1. To study the opinions of instructors concerning faculty performance evaluation in teacher education institutions. 2. To compare the opinions of instructors in the different teacher education institutions : comprehensive universities, education-oriented universities and teacher colleges concerning faculty performance evaluation. Methodology and procedures: This research was a descriptive research. The samples were selected from instructors of the Faculties of Education in Teacher Education Institutions, Bangkok Metropolitan, in the second semester of academic year 1984. These samples were divided into 3 groups : comprehensive universities instructors, education-oriented universities instructors and teacher colleges instructors. They were came from the determining sample size of Krecie and Morgan and 398 instructors were selected. 295 questionnaires were returned which were 74.12 percent of the total sample. The research instrument for this study was a rating scale questionnaire constructed by the researcher. Nine Hypotheses were tested for significant differences in opinions of instructors concerning faculty performance evaluation. The Statistical package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the collected data. The statistical methods used in this research were percentages, means, standard deviation, F-test, one way analyses of variance and Scheffe pair wise comparisons. Research Findings : 1. The instructors in different teacher education institutions had different opinions towards the purposes of faculty performance evaluation, significantly at the .05 level : the instructors of comprehensive universities value in important of faculty development more than the instructors of teacher colleges and value in important of a decision making about promotion and tenure less than the instructors of teacher colleges. 2. The instructors in different teacher education institutions had different opinions towards the work of faculty performance evaluation, significantly at the .05 level : the instructors of teacher colleges value in important of an administrative work and a supervisory work more than the instructors of comprehensive universities. 3. The instructors in different teacher education institutions had different opinions towards the personnel who will evaluate facultys teaching, significantly at the .05 level : the instructors of education-oriented universities and of teacher colleges agreed that the dean and the head of the department were much more suitable person while the instructors of comprehensive universities agreed that they were less suitable person. 4. The instructors in different teacher education institutions had different opinions towards the personnel who will evaluate facultys research and facultys textbook significantly at the .05 level : the instructors of teacher colleges agreed that the dean was much suitable person while the instructors of comprehensive universities agreed that he was less suitable person. 5. The instructors in different teacher education institutions had different opinions towards the personnel who will evaluate facultys administration significantly at the .05 level : the instructors of education oriented universities and those of teacher colleges agreed that the dean was much suitable person while the instructors of comprehensive universities agreed that he was less suitable person. 6. The instructors in different teacher education institutions had different opinions towards the personnel who will evaluate facultys supervision, significantly at the .05 level : the instructors of education-oriented universities agreed that the dean and the head of the department were much suitable person while the instructors of comprehensive universities agreed that they were less suitable person. 7. The instructors in different teacher education institutions had different opinions towards the personnel who will evaluate facultys academic service, significantly at the .05 level : the instructors of education-oriented universities and those of teacher colleges agreed that student were much suitable person while the instructors of comprehensive universities agreed that they were less suitable person. 8. The instructors in different opinions towards the student teachings evaluation, significantly at the .05 level : the instructors of comprehensive universities and those of education-oriented universities had the positive opinions more than the instructors of teacher colleges. Recommendations : The result of the opinions of instructors concerning faculty performance evaluation in teacher Education institutions showed that most of instructors value in important of the main objective : the evaluation to improve an instruction. So teacher education institutions should provide the suitable methodology for their own institutes in order to perform the suitable evaluation criteria that should be emphasized on the personnel development and teaching efficiency. As the matter of facts, Teacher Institution should concentrate on the mode of administration which would help both the academic work, the administration, and also on the importance of teaching and supervision. Besides this, teacher education institutions should obviously perform the evaluation criteria for those who will evaluate the faculty work, giving an opportunity for the instructors to express their ideas and to recognize the evaluation criteria : the mode of administration, working co-operation, exchange information and attitude. The result of the student teachings evaluation, instructors and student should recognize the importance of the evaluation which will help them make progress in higher education development.
