The development of trining workshop for secondary education student in Tesaban Meung Phuket School about the assessment of the water quality in Bang Yai Canal by using benthic organism as indicators
Abstract:
The purpose of this research were 1) to investigate the relationship between the quality of the water and the benthic organisms found in the Bang Yai Canal in Phuket, 2) to develop a learning package to encourage understanding, and attitudes of the student to restore the quality of in the Bang Yai Canal, 3) to test the efficiency of the training program using the pre-test and post-test and 4) Satisfaction with training programs for monitoring the relationship. Between water quality and animals. Klong Bang Yai. The environment study aimed to analyze the quality of the water by looking at the benthic organisms in the Bang Yai canal in the Phuket Province which was about 20 kilometers long. The study was carried out two times at five sports in the canal: during the dry season in the April 2010 and during the rainy season in the July 2010. The researcher collected and analyzed 19 samples of the water as well as the benthic organisms found in the canal water in each season was different.
The following benthoses were used as indicators of the quality of water in each station: Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT). It was found that the season is the major factor affected the type and density of the benthic organisms; in the rainy season, less types and amount of these organisms were found in the canal. Regarding the relationship between the quality of water and these benthic animals, it was revealed that different types of benthic animals were found in the water of different quality. The Mayflies and caddis flies were found in the good quality water stations which had the high level of Dissolved Oxygen, DO and a low level of Biochemical oxygen demand, BOD. A large amount other Red Midges and Aquatic Earthworms were found in the highly contaminated water stations. Regarding environmental education, the researcher created a learning package to train 50 students in Secondary education who were studying at Tesaban Mueng Phuket school about how to assess the quality of water using benthic organisms as an indicator. The results of the study revealed that the level of efficiency of the learning package was found to be high. The students level of understanding, attitudes, and awareness to conserve the quality had increased greatly with 0.05 level of reliability. They also were satisfied with the training program.
