Abstract:
Geographic variation in tropical forest bird reproductive strategies and population
dynamics may be partially explained by variations in post-fledging survival and
dispersal. Previous studies on post-fledgling survival of temperate forest birds have
reported lower survival rates than in tropic forest birds. However, it is unclear whether
tropical species follow a similar pattern as species in temperate regions, particularly in
tropical Asia, an area that has been less frequently studied. Our aim was to investigate
post-fledging survival and timing of juvenile dispersal for Abbott's Babbler
(Malacocincla abbottii, a small tropical insectivorous passerine common resident in
evergreen forest in northeastern Thailand. We collected mark-recapture data during two
breeding seasons for 18 pairs of Abbott's Babbler, which we then analysed using a
Connack-Jolly-Seber recaptures-only model in Program MARK. Cumulative survival
from fledging period to dispersal at 16 weeks post-fledging was 0.421+-0.1423 (SE).
Weekly survival was lowest during the first week of the post-fledging period, at
O.713+-0.1096 (SE), and increased following a positive log-linear trend
BetaaGE=0.5361+-0.2376 (SE). Survival rates of Abbott's Babbler were lower than those
reported for most tropical forest birds. From this study, we concluded survival rate of
Abbott's babbler during this year had no effect on geographic variation in their system;
however, accumulative survival from several years could have an effect on geographic
variation, or it could show a trend of population dynamics.
