Abstract:
Twenty-one rock samples collected from the Na Hong basin were
prepared for palynological study. A distinctive and moderately
diverse palynological assemblage from the basin was recognizable.
Two palynological zones, a Pediastrum Zone in the lower part and
an Inaperturopollenites dubius Zone in the upper part, were divided.
The Pediastrum Zone consists mainly of Pediastrum spp.,
Botryococcus spp., Sporotrapoidites spp., Pinuspol/enites sp.,
Tsugaepollenites igniculus, Piceaepollenites sp., Liquidambarpollenites
stigmosus, Alnipollenites verus, Momipites coryloides,
Polypodiisporites spp., and Laevigatosporites spp. and indicates a
lacustrine depositional environment.
The Inaperturopollenites dubius Zone consists mainly of
Inaperturopollenites dubius, Liquidambarpol/enites stigmosus,
Alnipollenites verus, and Momipites coryloides and, together with
sedimentary features of the rock sequence, indicates a fluviolacustrine
depositional environment.
Apart from the major palynomorphs in the two palynological zones,
there are also sporadic occurrences of Caryapollenites simplex,
Juglanspollenites verus, /lexpollenites iliacus, Pterocaryapollenites
stellatus, Cupuliferoipollenites pusillus, Rhoipites spp., and Polypodiaceoisporites
spp. The derived palynological assemblage
consistently suggests that the palaeoclimate of the basin was warm
temperate.
An assemblage of Alnipollenites verus, Tsugaepollenites igniculus,
Pinuspollenites sp., and Piceaepol/enites sp. indicates a Late
Oligocene to Early Miocene age.
