Abstract:
Textile dye wastewater from the dyeing process of 4 types of
dyestuffs namely, acid dyes, reactive dyes, dispersed dyes and direct
dyes as well as wastewater from the first aeration tank of aerated
lagoons system were treated by using reductant or oxidants. The
reductant used was sodium hydrosulfite. The oxidants used were
hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, and sodium chlorite. The
experiments were carried out using the Jar test procedure to
determine optimum pH and optimum reductant or oxidant dosage.
Colour removal was emphasized. Estimation of the cost of chemical
used was also performed. The results showed that reductant and
oxidants tested could only reduce colour from some types and some
tones of dyes to a certain level, while it could not reduce the colour
of wastewater from the first aeration tank to a satisfactory level (less
than 300 ADM I). In comparison with the results of the experiments
with coagulants 1, reduction or oxidation was less effective than
coagulation for colour removal of wastewater from reactive dyes,
dispersed dyes and wastewater from the first aeration tank. For
wastewater from acid dyes and direct dyes, reduction by sodium
hydrosulfite or oxidation by sodium hypochlorite was more effective
than or equal to coagulation.
