Cytological and Morphological Characteristics of Two Closely Related Species of the Genus Afgekia Craib (Leguminosae) from Thailand

Abstract: Mitotic karyotypes of Afgekia seneea Craib and A. mahidolae Burtt & Chermsirivathana collected from 13 natural populations in Thailand were analysed for the first time. The results revealed that each species exhibits a chromosome number of 2n=16. The chromosome complement of A. seneea consists of 8 metacentric and 8 submetacentric chromosomes, whereas that of A. mahidolae consists of 12 metacentric and 4 submetacentric chromosomes. Only slight differences in metaphase chromosomes morphology between the 2 species have been observed in this study, although they are geographically isolated. These data suggest that A. seneea and A. mahidolae arose as a result of allopatric speciation through the processes of allelic changes in different geographical populations of the ancestral species. This suggestion is supported by the geological history of Thailand.
