Abstract:
The main objectives of this sfudy are to study the producers' ability
to produce iodized salt according to MOPH Announcement No. 153/
1994 and whether they need any support. The quality control
process, distribution and marketing system of iodized salt were also
followed.
The research used both secondary data and survey data by using
in-depth interviews and survey questionnaire. Three provinces
namely Lampang, Udomthani and Nakom Rachasima are included
in this study.
The results of the study showed that producers can produce iodized
salt according to the quality standards set forth in the Announcement.
But the amount of iodized salt produced does not meet the demand
for consumption. To encourage greater production requires a
combined approach of increasing demand and providing necessary
support/subsidies to reduce cost. For the quality control process, a
simple test kit or titration test that can rapidly and reliably indicate
the iodine content of salt on-site is needed. The distribution and
marketing system of iodized salt are mainly through producers,
hawkers or wholesalers/retailers. Salt from MOPH represented very
small portion of the total salt consumption.
