A Comparative Corpus Study of Transitional Words in Research Articles of Thai and Native-like English Writers

Abstract: This comparative corpus study aims to investigate the use of transitional words between Thai writers and other writers with native-like proficiency. Since transitional words are vital devices to establish the logical relationship between ideas presented, the frequency analysis of words can help reveal the use of transitional words of Thai writers and other writers with native-like proficiency. The corpora of Thai and native-like speakers of Engilsh under the study are taken from 10 Thais' and 10 other writers' with native-like proficiency research articles in rEFLections journals. In order to study databases of authentic language, a concordancer called AntConc is used to run concordances. The frequency of transitional words in nine communicative function; namely, Addition, Comparion, Contrast, Exemplification, Consequence, Emphasis, Summation, Time and Cause/Reason are compared between the two corpara. Results show that five categories are different when they are compared between each category. When words in five categories are compared, eight words show significant differences. They reveal 1) different ways in building arguments, 2) different function of different placements, and 3) different use depending on choices of words between Thai writers and other writers with native-like proficiency.

Abstract: งานวิจัยเปรียบเทียบคลังภาษานี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสำรวจการใช้คำเชื่อมความระหว่างผู้เขียนไทยและ ผู้เขียนที่ใช้ภาษาระดับเดียวกับเจ้าของภาษา เนื่องจากคำเชื่อมความมีสำคัญในการสร้างความสัมพันธ์ เชิงตรรกะระหว่างความนึกคิดที่นำเสนอ การวิเคราะห์ความถี่ของการใช้คำเชื่อมความจะช่วยแสดงให้ เห็นถึงการใช้คำของผู้เขียนไทยและผู้เขียนที่ใช้ภาษาระดับเดียวกับเจ้าของภาษา คลังภาษาในงานวิจัย นี้นำมาจากบทความวิจัยภาษาอังกฤษในวารสารทางวิชาการด้านการเรียนการสอนภาษาอังกฤษ rEFLectons ซึ่งเขียนโดยคนไทยจำนวน 10 ฉบับ และผู้เขียนที่ใช้ภาษาระดับเดียวกับเจ้าของภาษา 10 ฉบับ งานวิจัยนี้ใช้โปรแกรม AntConc ในการประมวลผลคอนคอร์แดนซ์ เพื่อศึกษาความถี่ของการใช้ คำเชื่อมความทั้ง 9 ลักษณะในการสื่อสาร กล่าวคือ การเสริมความเพิ่มเติม การเปรียบเทียบ การแสดงความขัดแย้ง การบอกตัวอย่าง การบอกผล การเน้นความสำคัญ การแสดงการสรุป การบ่งบอกเวลาก่อนหลัง และการอธิบายสาเหตุและเหตุผล โดยนำมาเปรียบเทียบกันระหว่าง สองคลังภาษา ผลการวิจัยแสดงให้เห็นว่า คำเชื่อมความ 5 หมวดหมู่มีความแตกต่างกันเมื่อนำมาเปรียบเทียบระหว่าง แต่ละหมวดหมู่ และเมื่อเปรียบเทียบคำเชื่อมความภายในหมวดหมู่เดียวกัน พบว่ามีคำเชื่อมความ 8 คำ ที่แสดงความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่าการใช้คำเชื่อมความของผู้เขียนคนไทยและ ผู้เขียนที่ใช้ภาษาระดับเดียวกับเจ้าของภาษา มี 1) ความแตกต่างทางด้านการสร้าง ข้อโต้แย้ง 2) ความแตกต่างของหน้าที่ของคำเมื่ออยู่ในตำแหน่งที่แตกต่างกัน และ 3) ความแตกต่างใน การเลือกใช้คำ
