Techno-economic Study of Water Conditioning for the Royal Project Foundation's Rainbow Trout Farm
Abstract:
The success of the raceway culture of the rainbow trout occurred at Khun Klang
farms, Doi Inthanon. The objectives of this research project are to reduce the utility
consumption in one cycle of the rainbow trout culture at Khun Klang farms and to
design and determine economic feasibility of a small scale rainbow trout culture with
water recirculation system for one family of hill tribe. Parameters for economic
analysis were the culture volume (10 and 20 m3), the number of tanks (1, 2, 3, and 4),
the harvested size (150, 200, 250, and 300 g), and the production strategy (batch,
semi-batch, and continuous). The stocking density is held constant at 80 kg/m3 and
the fingerling size is the initial size.
The results showed that pre-cooling of make-up water is the method to reduce the
power of chillers from 4.2 kW to 3.36 kW (20 C to 18 C). Two crops can be applied
to culture rainbow trout in one year. For the base case at 800 kg/crop, the water flow
rate to maintain the desired concentration was 1,800 L/min. The culture system
consists of a settling basin, a drum filter, a submerged filter, an UV disinfection and a
packed bed aerator. The selected system was one culture tank with one treatment unit.
Semi-batch production yielded the lowest operating cost per kg rainbow trout, while
the continuous production presented the highest DCFROR and NPV. The number of
tanks did not affect the profitability performance. The water culture volume of 20 m3
yielded more profitability performance than that of 10 m3case. All cases of economic
analysis were feasible with DCFROR between 23% and 63%. B4-150C had the
highest DCFROR and NPV of 63% and 6,489,000 baht, respectively.
