An analysis of Naming strategies of foreign film titles in Thai language
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to analyse naming strategies of foreign film titles in
Thai language. One hundred and eighty-nine horror films screened during 2003-2006
were analysed, basing on Skopos theory. Three translators of film titles were
interviewed to obtain more data for the study.
It was found that six main strategies were applied; namely, theme-based
translation without repetition of words in original titles, transliteration of the original
English titles with addition of sub-titles, partial direct translation of original titles with
additional meaning in Thai language, word-by-word translation, direct translation
from English titles with addition of titles, and film actor characteristics-based
translation. The theme-based translation without repetition of words in original titles
was found most frequently used (51.32%), followed by transliteration of the original
English titles with addition of sub-titles (20.63%), partial direct translation of original
titles with additional meaning in Thai language (20.10%), word-by-word translation
and direct translation from English titles with addition of titles (7.7% each), and films
actor characteristics based translation (0.52%) respectively.
