Lighting Master Plan Design Guidelines for Kadeejeen Neighborhood
Abstract:
This research aimed to create lighting master plan design guideline for Kadeejeen
neighborhood in Bangkok. It has generated from people's preferences in existing urban
lighting. In this study, I aimed to analyze the element of Kadeejeen neighborhood and
define the significant area through my research results. The primary research objective
was to develop a lighting master plan to enhance the heritage, the distinctive
architecture, the streetscape and the urban environment. This research comprised a
survey that aims to discover people's opinions on certain lit urban scenes.
The methods included photographic survey, photometric measurement and
questionnaire to find the satisfaction of the existing lighting from local and tourist
respondents. The questionnaire was divided in to 3 parts; yes! no questions, open-ended
questions and Likert's scale. The results of the survey were compared to lighting
recommendation and lighting standard (IESNA), and literature and case studies about
urban lighting were reviewed It was found that almost lighting of heritage architecture
and public space in Kadeejeen were not appropriated with the loss of architectural
appearance in nighttime, and high contrast between architecture and its surrounding
which created light pollution and glary effect to human. Lighting for recreation area
such as sport filed or playground, had low light quality which did not encourage the
nighttime activity along with tourisms.
Therefore, this study suggests that it is necessary to improve the lighting quality to
enhance the aesthetic of night scene. Through this research I aimed to suggest proper
lighting techniques to prevent lighting pollution, create schematics design for special
ceremony, and propose new lighting design guideline.
Preliminary results of the questionnaires indicated that people did not appreciate with
the existing lighting. Respondents expected new design would enable greater legibility
of the urban in nighttime. The lighting master plan can become an important interpretive
device and enhance tourism attractiveness to visitors and residents especially for culture
heritage community likes Kadeejeen. In addition, good lighting design was hoped to
create good night-life quality too.
However, it must be noted that these preliminary results should serve as a reference for
potential future research directions and elevate design of urban lighting master planning
to others that would take human perception needs into consideration.
