Abstract: This project uncovers the myths behind the definition of beauty in Thai society at present. Globalized mass media is the means which capitalism takes control in fostering the beauty myths to the society. Women, especially teenagers, appear to be unaware of the commercialized mass media that put pressures on them to aspire to sexual attractiveness and worship the airbrushed flawless physical appearance. Thai teenagers are brainwashed by the influence of foreign cultures and characters to adore white radiance skin with big eyes, skinny bone body, extreme high heels and so on. Many of them are willing to be suffered, tortured or even do harm to their life in order to make or fix their ordinary parts of bodies to morph into the new definition of beauty, flawless and perfection. As a result, these tum them to become the victims of body obsessions that lead to body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem and self-identity disturbance. 'Body Obsession: The Subversion of Self Identity' or" ลุ่มหลงในร่างลวง การบ่อนเซาะ อัตลักษณ์แห่งตน" (in Thai) is the main theme of the project under the objectives to trigger people, especially female teenagers to question themselves about their struggles to pursue the unrealistic beauty standards and uncover the myths behind the definition of 'beauty' in Thai society at present. The practice-based research is the core fundamental working process throughout final artwork development. The project outcomes are developed by trial and error and nonlinear exploration of the body obsession concept through the development of threedimensional figurines of fragmented bodies, then visualizing them through the camera view into series of fine art photographs, which ironically communicate the results of the physical appearance obsession and the subversive effects on self-identity. Finally, the paper also examines the original fine art photographs, comparing to the photographic object experiments. The interrogative and reflective thinking through the critical decision process have been explored in order to reach the optimum sense of communication design of 'Body Obsession: the Subversion of SelfIdentity'.
