Abstract:
This study investigates causes of anxiety of students during oral presentations and ways
to reduce it. The subjects surveyed were 104 undergraduate students at King Mongkut's
University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) who enrolled in LNG 103 Fundamental
English III which required students to give two main presentations. This special study
was conducted by the use of a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview.
The findings reveal that major causes of anxiety in oral presentations are unfamiliarity
with speaking in front of many people, being afraid that the presentation would not go
as well as expected to, finding themselves less proficient when comparing with others,
having not enough time to prepare the presentation, being worried to forget the script,
having language problems and being unable to answer the questions. Furthermore, the
supports that most students need are rehearsal together with the feedback both from
teacher and peers as well as more time on presentation preparation.
According to the major causes found in this study, creating confidence, preparing for an
effective presentation and improving language ability are required in order to reduce
students' anxiety in oral presentations. Moreover, the importances of rehearsal as well
as enough time for preparation are discussed in this study.
The researcher hopes that this study might be useful in raising teachers' awareness of
preparing their students to give oral presentations more effectively.
