Burden among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia in Thai Nguyen, Vietnam
Abstract:
Schizophrenia is a devastating psychiatric disorder which can progressively result in long-term disability in patients. It poses the numerous burdens for patients and their
caregivers as well as the societies in which they live. The purposes of this study were to describe a caregivers burden and examine its relationships with his/her age, education level, health status, average time per day for taking care of patients, and his/her perception of severity of illness of patients with schizophrenia. The participants were 120 caregivers who
met the inclusion criteria of the study. The data were obtained via interview at the Outpatient Department of Psychiatric Hospital Thai Nguyen, Vietnam, using the Family Burden Interview Schedule. The collected data included both the caregivers and patients general
information. Also, the data on the caregivers health status, and their perception of severity of patients illness were collected. The descriptive statistics and Pearsons Product Moment Correlation were used to analyze the data.
The results revealed that the majority of caregivers were females (80%). Most of them were married (90.8%). About 51.6% of them completed general education. The average time per day for caregivers spending on giving care to the patients was 2.57 hours (SD = 1.19). The majority of caregivers were related to patients as their parents (48.4%). The caregivers
burden was found at a moderate level ( X = 0.95, SD = 0.46). Also, there were a positive relationship between the caregivers burden and their age, time per day spent on taking care of patients, health status, and their perception of severity of patients illness. However, a negative relationship between the caregivers burden and their education level was found.
In conclusion, the primary caregivers physical, mental health conditions, and their perception of severity of patients illness were the factors related to their burdensome. The findings obtained from this preliminary study help to increase the understanding of caregivers burden and its related factors when taking care of patients with schizophrenia in Vietnam. The results of this study would be useful for the development of nursing intervention which aims at reducing burden and enhancing quality of life of patients and those
who are their primary caregivers.
