An Investigation into the Journal Writing : A Case Study of Upper Primary School Learners at Darunsikkhalai School
Abstract:
This study aims at investigating 1) the correlation between the actual journal writings
formulated by the learners and the purposes set by the school and 2) the perceptions
toward journal writings of the learners. Two research questions had been set up in order
to answer the mentioned issues, such as: Do the learners' writings correspond to the
purposes that the school set? And, how do the learners perceive and find the usefulness
of keeping a learning journal? The objective of this study is to explore whether the
learners understand and perceive positive attitudes toward writinglkeeping learning
journals and whether the learners could find usefulness and get benefits from the
writings that colligate to the purposes of the school.
The research instruments used in this study were the writing entries formulated by the
learners and the semi-structured interviews. The subjects in this study were the eight
upper primary school learners at Darunsikkhalai, School for Innovative Learning.
The results of the study indicate that the actual journal writings formulated by the eight
subject learners could meet the expectations and thus achieve the purposes set, in the
three domains, by the school.
The study also reveals the learners' positive attitudes toward keeping learning journals
of the learners, and so reveals the usefulness the learners could find and get benefits
from writing and keeping them.
The study shows significant consequences in that 'journal writing initiates worthwhile
learning experiences among the learners'; it is then recommended that the
teachers/educators should promote this kind of learning tool to the learners and schools,
since the study evinced the development of learners' learning awareness and the
writing/communicative skills. Journals, in addition, facilitate learners in becoming
better in their way of autonomous learning.
