Effects of christian leadership characteristics and management approaches on christian business success
Abstract:
This study determined and described the relationships of Christian leadership characteristics and Christian management approaches that contribute to Christian business success in Thailand. The population was 665 entrepreneurs, or founders-owners-managers, and executives in the top management level, consisting of 359 Catholics and 306 Protestants. The sample size, by Yamane method, was 250, through random sampling of 135 Catholics and 115 Protestants.
The research design integrated both qualitative and quantitative approaches for descriptive correlational research using a survey method. The qualitative approach was taken to articulate items in Thai Christian context, specifically by conducting two in-depth interviews, and three focused-group discussions with nine outstanding informants for Christian business success prior to formulating the questionnaire of 87 items, using seven interval rating scale for quantitative approach. The content validity was analyzed through Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) by five experts. The instrument reliability was tried out with 30 cases who were not included in the samples. The Cronbachs Alpha Coefficient values were accepted with value between 0.701 - 0.905. The item analysis was confirmed through Corrected Item-Total Correlation (CITC) with value between 0.378 - 0.848 (p < 0.05).
The data were analyzed with the correlation matrix not higher than 0.85, in order to solve multicollinearity problems (Polit, 1996: 281) and stepwise multiple regression to predict their relationship with Christian business success. There are two findings of this study: 1) Five significant predictors of Christian leadership characteristics for Christian business success (F = 41.240, p-value = < .001): awareness (=.269), foresight (=.128), persuasion (=.123), building community (=.121), and stewardship (=.090); and 2) Five significant predictors of Christian management approaches for Christian business success (F = 78.949, p-value = < 0.001): budgeting with generosity (=.220), evaluating with transparency (=.195), planning with Gods blessing (=.158), directing with trust (=.141), and coordinating with truthfulness (=.107).
As a pioneering study on this topic, recommendations for further research include: 1) conducting a similar study taking into account differences in culture, place and time, 2) investigating the causal relationship with business success in order to validate the theoretical concept, 3) developing new measurement or assessment tools in order to better predict performance outcomes, 4) replicating the study with other target groups in order to compare the findings with this study, and 5) studying the leadership characteristics, management approaches and business success of adherents of other religions by using this research as a model.
