Development of computer-based interactive diabetes educational programs for effective dietary self-management
Abstract:
Interactive computer-based diabetes educational programs have become
more popular at the present time. Some of these educational programs have been
shown to increase patients knowledge about diabetes. However, in Thailand research
on the development of methods for computer-based learning about type 2 diabetes has
been rare. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to develop and evaluate a
Computer-based Interactive diabetes Educational program (CIE program) designed to
train patients with type 2 diabetes to facilitate diabetes dietary self management. The
study was divided into 2 phases:
The first phase was to develop computer-based diabetes educational
programs. The second phase was to evaluate the outcomes of the implementation of
the CIE program in 45 participants by assessing 1) the participants understanding and
accuracy of carbohydrate counting 2)the participants satisfaction with the CIE
program. The participants performed a pre-test and post-test before and after using the
CIE program. Participants received a print-out of their individual scores, aims, targets
and examples of carbohydrate (CHO) portions to review at home for one week before
completing an addition post-test final evaluation.
The results demonstrated that most patients significantly improved their
knowledge and understanding of meal planning using CHO counting (p<0.05). Before
using the CIE program, 73% of participants did not pass the pre-test (a passing score
was ≥80). After using the program, results from both post-tests showed that 87% and
93% of participants passed, respectively. The results of the accuracy of CHO counting
showed that most participants (>75% of participants) obtained correct answers on all
items. In addition, almost all of the participants were satisfied with the CIE program.
In conclusion, the CIE program is an acceptable, applicable and attractive
learning program. Not only does it provide practical dietary guidance for patients with
diabetes, but it is also a valuable program for care-takers and health service providers
