Dosimetric characterization of patients undergoing common radiological examination using IAEA technical report series no457 protocol : a study of a phantom at Phyathai 2 Hospital
Abstract:
This study was carried out to measure the radiation doses in a phantom
using different x-ray imaging modalities for the common projections at Phyathai 2
hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Phantom dose measurements were performed using
digital radiography (DR), fluoroscopy, mammography, and computed tomography
(CT) with methods described by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
technical reports series no 457. The radiation doses were measured in terms of
entrance surface air kerma using digital radiography and entrance surface air kerma
rates using fluoroscopy. Glandular doses were measured using mammography. The
CT air kerma indices were measured with computed tomography.
Results from the study showed that the entrance surface air kerma were
0.08 milligray (mGy), 0.14 mGy, 0.08 mGy for the chest, 0.53 mGy, 0.07 mGy for
the skull, 1.08 mGy, 2.52 mGy for the abdomen and 1.16 mGy, 2.25 mGy for the
lumbosacal (LS) spine. The entrance surface air kerma rates using fluoroscopy
were 18.67 mGy, 19.72 mGy, 21.17 mGy and 24.81 mGy for image intensifier
field sizes of 38 cm, 31 cm, 25 cm and 17 cm, respectively. The glandular doses
using mammography were 1.74 mGy and 1.20 mGy. The CT air kerma indices
were as follows: head, 45.12 mGy; abdomen, 15.54 mGy; and chest, 13.30 mGy.
These results were compared to diagnostic reference levels from international
recognized organizations (IAEA, NEXT, NRPB, and ICRP). We found that the
radiation doses from all studies were lower than diagnostic reference levels.
