A study of self-identity changes of Thai students studying English at The Faculty of Humanities Naresuan University and The Faculty of Liberal Arts Thammasat University

การศึกษาความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านอัตลักษณ์ของนักศึกษาไทยที่เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ กรณีศึกษานักศึกษาคณะมนุษยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวรและนักศึกษาคณะศิลปศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์

Abstract: This quantitative study investigated 1) types of self-identity changes occurring in undergraduate students majoring in English, at Naresuan University (Eng NU) and Thammasat University (Eng TU), as well as students majoring in English language and literature at Thammasat University (Eng Lit), 2) differences in self-identity changes between students who studied English in town, Thammasat University, versus country, Naresuan University, 3) factors which have influenced these self-identity changes, and 4) the relationship between influential factors and types of self-identity changes. The research instrument was a questionnaire. ANOVA was carried out to test differences (F-test) and analyze the correlations (t-test) between six types of changes and six independent variables. The results showed that the majority of respondents were affected by subtractive change, i.e. where the native language and cultural identity is substituted with the target language and cultural identity, and split change, in which the struggle between the languages and cultures gives rise to an identity conflict. In addition, students in town or country were not different in self-identity changes. The most influential factor affecting self-identity change was having foreign friends. Students who had foreign friends underwent more changes in self-confidence about their English usage than those who did not. The results on the relationship between influential factors and the types of self-identity changes indicate that motivation and attitude are related to self-identity changes

Abstract: งานวิจัยเชิงปริมาณนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาประเภทของความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้าน อัตลักษณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นกับนักศึกษาที่เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ 2) ศึกษาความแตกต่างของความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้าน อัตลักษณ์ระหว่างนักศึกษาที่อยู่ในเมือง (มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์) และนักศึกษาในต่างจังหวัด (มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร) 3) ศึกษาปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านอัตลักษณ์ 4) ศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ ระหว่างตัวแปรต้นและประเภทของความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านอัตลักษณ์ โดยทำการศึกษาวิจัยกับกลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือนักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 3 คณะมนุษยศาสตร์ วิชาเอกภาษาอังกฤษ มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร และนักศึกษาวิชาเอก ภาษาอังกฤษ รวมทั้งวิชาเอกภาษาและวรรณคดีอังกฤษ คณะศิลปศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ โดยใช้ แบบสอบถามและ วิเคราะห์ตัวแปรโดยการหาค่าทางสถิติด้วย ANOVA ซึ่งใช้ F-test และ T-test เพื่อหาค่า ความแตกต่างและหาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวแปรต้นและประเภทของความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านอัตลักษณ์ ผลการวิจัยพบว่าวิชาเอกมีผลต่อความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านอัตลักษณ์ด้าน subtractive และ split และยังพบว่า นักศึกษาที่เรียนในเมืองและต่างจังหวัดเกิดความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านอัตลักษณ์ไม่ต่างกัน อีกทั้งปัจจัยที่มี อิทธิผลต่อความเปลี่ยนแปลงอัตลักษณ์คือ การมีเพื่อนชาวต่างประเทศ โดยจะทำให้ผู้เรียนเกิดความ เปลี่ยนแปลงด้านความมั่นใจในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ (self-confidence) มากกว่าผู้ที่ไม่มีเพื่อนชาวต่างชาติ นอกจากนี้แรงจูงใจและทัศนคติยังมีความสัมพันธ์กับความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านอัตลักษณ์อีกด้วย
