Predicting cigarette smoking cessation intention among vocational education's students Bangkok : application of the theory of planned behavior
Abstract:
This cross-sectional study aimed to predict cigarette smoking cessation
intention among vocational educations students using the Theory of Planned Behavior
(TPB).The subjects were 652 students who study in vocational school (1st-3rd year)
aged 15-24 years. Simple random sampling was used to identify the subjects. Subjects
were given a set of questionnaires, which surveyed the issues of nicotine addiction
(CAGE Questionnaire), attitudes toward smoking cessation, subjective norms,
perceived behavioral control, and smoking cessation intention during the next 6
months. This study used descriptive statistics, t-test and multiple regression analysis.
The results of this study showed that the total model using TPB showed
attitude (β = 0.042, p < 0.05), subjective norms (β = 0.317, p < 0.05) and perceived
behavioral control (β = 0.186, p < 0.05) were able to predict smoking cessation
intention at 9.8%. After classifying the nicotine dependent group, the study found
attitude (β = 0.032, p < 0.05), subjective norms (β = 0.214, p < 0.05) and perceived
behavioral control (β = 0.167, p < 0.05) were able to predict smoking cessation
intention at 17.4%. For the nicotine independent group, the study found attitude (β =
0.115, p < 0.05), subjective norms (β = 0.097, p > 0.05) and perceived behavioral
control (β = 0.121, p < 0.05) were able to predict smoking cessation intention at 5.5%.
The results of the study suggest that TPB can explain smoking cessation
intention among adolescents and increase the power for prediction when indirect
variables are added.
