Development of algorithms in surgical guidance system using image processing techniques
Abstract:
This study presents a new systemic algorithm for the dental implant navigation
system in an intra-operative process. The main objective of the intra-operative
navigation system is to illustrate the relationship between the guided path and the
instruments tool tip. The goal of this work is development of an optical tracking
system using stereo vision technology and development of a set of specially designed
fiducial markers. Therefore, the task is to determine the position of active markers
constructed by infrared-emitting diodes in the specific designed patterns. The
kinematics relationship is computed by using the kinematic equations of the
homogeneous transformations obtained from the marker positions in acquisition
images. The system consists of 3 main parts; 1) infrared surgical markers, 2) stereo
camera system, and 3) surgical guidance software system. Furthermore, to fulfill the
completed system, the study had to develop the marker pattern recognition, and the
tool tip calibration with point-cloud-to-point-cloud technique and the least-square
solution. The experiment is validated on a phantom rapid prototype. The physical real
world positions are compared to the known measurement in the model. The results are
highly accurate with the quantity of minimum error 0.0922±0.0150 mm. or in the
maximum accuracy 90.78±1.50% in positions and with 0.1830±0.1150-0.3270±
0.1730 in orientations. With this amount of normalized errors, this algorithm is
benefit for use in position and orientation tracking in medical application. This work
attempted to develop a fully aided system for navigated, guided and assisted surgical
performance.
