Properties of NRSBR blend influenced by carbon black and silica as reinforcing filler
Abstract:
NR/SBR blend is an important raw material to produce the tire tread. Excellent tensile
strength, high skid resistance and high abrasion resistance are the advantages of NR/SBR
blend. In order to develop the mechanical property of rubber product, the reinforcing filler
carbon black and silica is widely used.
In this work, the influence of carbon black and silica on the properties of NR/SBR
blends was investigated. The rubber blend ratio of NR and SBR was achieved as 50/50 percent
by volume. The initial Mooney viscosity of NR and SBR was carefully controlled to be nearly
equal, while the carbon black and silica loadings were varied from 0 to 50 phr. The study of
NR/SBR composite on both dynamic and static properties was carried out. RPA2000, DMTA
and Goodrich Flexometer were employed to investigate the dynamic mechanical property of
blend. Moreover, the phase morphology, tension and electrical property were also reported.
The NR/SBR blend is classified as the partial miscible blend and simultaneously
generates the sulfur crosslink in NR and SBR phase. Furthermore, the filler-filler interaction
of both carbon black and silica in NR and SBR phase of rubber blend shows a different
characteristic. Both carbon black and silica establish the filler network within SBR phase
easier than NR phase. However, carbon black particles could conveniently produce the
continuous structure within NR phase. The enhancement of storage modulus, heat buildup
tensile strength and crosslink density can be observed when increasing carbon black and silica
loading.
