Relationship of personal factors empowerment and competencies of nurse practitioners working in primary care units
Abstract:
The purpose of this correlational descriptive research was to study nurse
practitioners competencies and factors relating to their competencies. The sample
consisted of 151 nurse practitioners in primary care units in the 3rd public health
region. The instruments were self-administered questionnaires consisting of question on
personal data, empowerment and competencies of nurse practitioners. Data were collected
by mailing during September, 2008 and analyzed by percentage, means, standard
deviations, Mann-Whitney Test, and Pearsons product-moment correlation
coefficient.
Results revealed that the competency of nurse practitioners was at a high
level ( x = 3.88, S.D. = 0.31). The overall empowerment of nurse practitioners was at
moderate level ( x = 3.47, S.D. = 0.59). There was a positive significant relationship
between empowerment and competency of nurse practitioners (r = 0.34, pvalue<.
001).
The findings suggest that nurse practitioners should be empowered
continuously to increase their professional competence and to support their future
education at higher levels in order to become advanced practice nurses.
