Development and testing of a physical activity questionnaire among community-dwelling older Thai adults in Bangkok
Abstract:
Descriptive cross-sectional research was used to develop and test a self-report
physical activity questionnaire (SPAQ) distributed to community-dwelling older Thai
adults who resided in Bangkok. There were two phases in this study: Phase I:
Questionnaire development consisted of six steps: 1) define the concept, 2) generate
an item pool, 3) define the choices of responses to items, 4) review items, 5) analyze
item selection, and 6) conduct a pilot study. Interrater agreement and the item-level for
content validity index (I-CVIs) of the first draft of the SPAQ (47 items) were .99 and
.89, respectively. The face validity was conducted with the second draft of the SPAQ
(48 items). Item selection analysis was conducted with the third draft of the SPAQ (77
items) using content analysis based on four dimensions: household, occupation, leisure
time, and transportation. Finally, a pilot study was conducted to test the performance
of the final draft of the SPAQ with 55 items. Phase II: Psychometric property
evaluation used Pearsons correlation coefficient to analyze the concurrent validity,
predictive validity, and test-retest reliability. The concurrent validity coefficient was
obtained by examining a relationship between the SPAQ and accelerometer (r = .31,
p = .01). The SPAQ presented good predictive validity indicated by its correlation
with the Six-Minute Walk Test (r = .75, p = .05). However, a non-significant
correlation between the SPAQ and either physical function or body fat was found.
Male-older Thai adults demonstrated higher cardio-respiratory fitness, moderateintensity
activity, exercise, transportation, recreation, and occupation than did femaleolder
Thai adults. However, female-older Thai adults demonstrated higher significant
correlations of low-intensity activity and household work than did male-older Thai
adults. The 7-day test-retest reliability coefficient of the SPAQ indicated a good
reliability of .93.
This study demonstrated that the SPAQ is relatively convenient, simple, and
suitable for administration, although the concurrent validity presented a modest
coefficient. However, this result is similar to that in other western countries
