The Thais' buddhist ethical princples in the Songkran festival celebration : a case study of the Songkran festival celebration in the Khonkaen province.
Abstract:
The study is of Thai Buddhist Ethical Principles in the Songkran Festival, in
the Khonkaen Province Thailand. A quantitative method was used to view Thai
people regarding the belief, lifestyle, and society in the Songkran Festival. The test
instrument was a set of questionnaires consisting of four parts. Part one is about the
demography of respondents. Part two investigates understanding of ethics in the Songkran
Festival. Part three is the descriptive statements of Thai people regarding the belief,
lifestyle, and society in the Songkran Festival. Part four is the descriptive statements of
the factors affecting ethics regarding of surviving, the economy, and society in the
Songkran Festival. The data were analyzed by using the computer program SPSS for
Windows. Statistics used for data analysis are mean, percentage, standard deviation, Ftest,
t-test, and Pearsons Product Moment Correlation Coefficient.
The result of the research is that the sample groups with different ages
and genders have different opinions about the ethics of the Songkran celebration.
The Songkran Festival is one of the festivals when the traffic is very heavy.
People drive with carelessness and latch of awareness. Women dress revealingly,
wearing tight t-shirts or tank tops and short skirts. There are lots of accidents
occurred during this time. This has changed the tradition of the Songkran Festival
from the past.
