Abstract: This thesis is a description of So (Thavung), a language in the Vietic branch, Mon- Khmer subfamily, Austroasiatic family. Currently, So (Thavung) is classified as a Stageseven endangered language on Fishman’s Graded Intergenerational Disruption Scale (GIDS). The younger So (Thavung) rarely speak their language and the fluent speakers are estimated at 100. The objective of the study was to describe So (Thavung) grammar including phonology and syntax in order to document this small and endangered language. The data was gathered and rechecked from the So (Thavung) at Nong Waeng and Nong Muang villages, Patumwapi subdistrict, Song Dao district, Sakon Nakhon province during the period 2005- 2007. In data analysis, auditory judgment was applied for phonological analysis, together with the PRAAT computer program for the acoustic measurement on registers. Thomas’ (1993) tagmemic model, on the other hand, was the main tool adopted for the syntactic analysis of the language. The phonological findings of the study show that though So (Thavung) is described as having a typical Mon-Khmer register contrast, some pairs of pitch contrast are also found in some casual speech. This may result in So (Thavung) becoming tonal in the future if the main feature of voice quality is completely lost. As for the syntax of the language, it has been modified and become more like Thai-Lao syntax. The typical word order is subject- verbobject. Many Thai-Lao loanwords including grammatical words have been found both in the speech of the elderly and young people. In addition, the affixation is not productive anymore. So (Thavung), in conclusion, is considered to be endangered due to its status as a language in transition and the declining number of fluent speakers.

Abstract: วิทยานิพนธ์นี้เป็นการศึกษาภาษาโซ่ (ทะวืง) ซึ่งเป็นภาษาที่จัดอยู่ในสาขาเวียดติกของ ตระกูลย่อยมอญ-เขมร ตระกูลออสโตรเอเชียติก ปัจจุบันภาษานี้จัดเป็นภาษาใกล้สูญ ขั้นที่ 7 ซึ่ง กลุ่มรุ่นเด็กแทบจะไม่ใช้ภาษาของตนเองแล้ว ส่วนกลุ่มผู้ใหญ่ที่พูดภาษาได้ดีมีจำนวนน้อยมาก ประมาณ 100 คนเท่านั้น วัตถุประสงค์ของการศึกษาครั้งนี้เพื่อบรรยายไวยากรณ์ภาษาโซ่ (ทะวืง) ทางด้านระบบเสียงและระบบประโยคเพื่อเป็นการเก็บบันทึกข้อมูลสำหรับภาษาเล็กและใกล้สูญนี้ โดยเก็บและตรวจสอบข้อมูลจากเจ้าของภาษาที่บ้านหนองแวงและบ้านหนองม่วง ตำบลปทุมวาปี อำเภอส่องดาว จังหวัดสกลนคร ในช่วงปี พ.ศ.2548-2550 ในเรื่องของการวิเคราะห์ระบบเสียง นั้นใช้การฟังเป็นหลักและได้นำโปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ (PRAAT computer program) มาช่วย วิเคราะห์ลักษณะน้ำเสียงเพื่อเสริมความถูกต้องจากการฟังอีกทางหนึ่งด้วย ส่วนระบบประโยคใช้ ทฤษฎีแทกมีมิค (Thomas, 1993) ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ผลการศึกษาด้านระบบเสียงพบว่า แม้ภาษาโซ่ (ทะวืง) จะมีลักษณะน้ำเสียงซึ่งเป็น ลักษณะของภาษากลุ่มมอญ-เขมร แต่ยังพบลักษณะเปรียบต่างของระดับเสียงในคำบางคู่ในการ สนทนาแบบไม่เป็นทางการ ลักษณะนี้อาจเป็นผลทำให้ภาษาโซ่ (ทะวืง) พัฒนาเป็นภาษาที่มี วรรณยุกต์ในอนาคต ส่วนด้านระบบประโยคของภาษา มีการปรับเปลี่ยนไปคล้ายระบบภาษาไทย- ลาวมากขึ้น การเรียงคำโดยปกติเป็นแบบประธาน กริยา กรรม พบคำยืมและคำไวยากรณ์จาก ภาษาไทย-ลาวเป็นจำนวนมากทั้งในกลุ่มผู้พูดสูงอายุและกลุ่มเด็ก มีการใช้ระบบการเติมวิภัตปัจจัย น้อย ภาษาโซ่ (ทะวืง) จัดได้ว่าเป็นภาษาใกล้สูญเนื่องจากเป็นภาษาที่อยู่ในช่วงของการ เปลี่ยนแปลงอีกทั้งจำนวนผู้พูดภาษาได้ดีมีจำนวนน้อยลงอย่างต่อเนื่อง
