Abstract:
The objectives of this study were determining patients participation in, and
factors resulting in, prevention of adverse events from operations at private hospitals
in Bangkok. This study surveyed 276 post-operative patients who had undergone
orthopedic, urogenital, gynecologic, and the other surgeries. All post-operative
patients were sampled purposively and given a questionnaire which was created and
improved from literature reviews, to collect data. The data were analyzed by
frequency, percentage and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The results showed most of patients (72.46 as the percentage) highly
participated for prevention of adverse events from operations in overall. The factors
resulting in participation were giving the patient a chance to engage in prevention
(P<0.01), perception of the patients role (P<0.01), assistance received during preoperation,
operation and post-operation (P<0.05), and relationship between patient and
health care providers (P<0.05).
It is suggested that The Institute of Hospital Quality Improvement and
Accreditation should make a policy for both private and state hospitals to support and
improve perception of patients role in prevention of adverse events from operations,
in order to make the patients more fully understand their role. The hospitals should
improve their services, especially chances for patient participation. Besides these,
patients should realize their role and pay attention to participating in prevention from
adverse events during curative procedures.
