The effect of dietary behavior modification and exercise program on lipid profile in coronary artery disease patients
Abstract:
Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of illness and death for people in
Thailand and many other countries in the world. This study was an experimental study which
studied the effects of dietary behavior modification and an exercise program on lipid profile in
coronary artery disease patients. The population of this study comprised 43 coronary artery
disease patients who admitted in CCU or ICCU at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital,
Bangkok during March 2007 - May 2008. Each sample was randomized into an experimental
or control group. The experimental group received the dietary behavior modification and
exercise program and the control group received the usual care. The data collection was during
the first or second day after admission and 12 weeks after discharge, by using interviewing
questionnaires. The data were analyzed by using Independent-Sample T-Test.
The results found that the intervention group had significantly lower total
cholesterol level and low density lipoprotein cholesterol level (p = 0.018 and 0.021,
respectively) than the control group. The mean score of the exercise behavior scores in the
intervention group was significantly higher than the control group during post-intervention (p
= 0.029). After the 12 weeks period, the mean scores of the dietary behavior scores in the
experimental group and control group were significantly higher than the pre-intervention
phase (p = 0.001 and 0.004, respectively).
The recommendation from this study is to increase interpersonal influences by family
members to encourage the patients. In addition, an exercise pattern should be provided to the
patients to help guide practice
