Abstract: วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ เป็นการศึกษาการใช้คำลงท้ายภาษาไทยในวรรณกรรมแปลเรื่อง อาร์ทิมิส ฟาวล์, อาร์ทิมิส ฟาวล์ ตอนมหันตภัยในอาร์กติก และอาร์ทิมิส ฟาวล์ ตอนรหัสลับนิรันดร ซึ่งมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความหมายและจัดกลุ่มคำลงท้าย ศึกษาปัจจัยและบริบทในภาษาอังกฤษ ตลอดจนวัฒนธรรมการใช้ภาษาไทยที่มีผลต่อการใช้คำลงท้าย โดยเป็นการวิเคราะห์จากบทสนทนา ฉบับแปลภาษาไทยที่ปรากฏว่ามีการใช้คำลงท้ายเทียบเคียงกับต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ ผลการศึกษาพบว่าสามารถแบ่งกลุ่มคำลงท้ายภาษาไทยได้ 3 กลุ่มใหญ่ คือ คำลงท้ายแสดง การถาม คำลงท้ายแสดงสถานภาพ (ทั้งคำลงท้ายแสดงความสุภาพ และคำลงท้ายแสดงความไม่ สุภาพ) และคำลงท้ายแสดงอารมณ์ ความรู้สึก และทัศนคติของผู้พูด โดยคำลงท้ายแต่ละคำสามารถ ใช้สื่อนัยความหมายได้หลากหลาย ซึ่งจะแตกต่างกันไปตามบริบท สถานการณ์ และคู่สนทนา ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการใช้คำลงท้าย ประกอบด้วย 1) ปัจจัยในภาษาอังกฤษ ได้แก่ คำหรือ สำนวน เครื่องหมายวรรคตอน โครงสร้างประโยค และบริบท และ 2) ปัจจัยด้านวัฒนธรรมการใช้ ภาษาไทย ได้แก่ สถานภาพและความสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมไทย และการใช้ภาษาตามธรรมชาติของ ภาษาไทย

Abstract: This thesis is a study of Thai final particles used in the translated version of the works of children’s literature named Artemis Fowl, Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident and Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code. The objectives of this research were to study the meanings of and classify the Thai final particles in the translations as well as to find out the linguistic and cultural factors affecting the use of these final particles. The analysis was based on the final particles appearing in Thai conversations in the books and their English originals. Based on the findings, Thai final particles can be classified into 3 main groups: question, status (politeness and impoliteness) and mood particles. It was found that each final particle can be used to express various meanings which depend on contexts, situations and speaker-listener relationship. Regarding the factors affecting the use of Thai final particles, two main factors were identified: 1) linguistic factors in English which included vocabularies or idioms, punctuation marks, sentence structures and contexts and 2) cultural factors in Thai which included social status and social relationship as well as natural Thai usage
