Relationship between health beliefs and the completion of treatment process among methamphetamine dependent patients : case study at Thanyarak Institute
Abstract:
This research was a cross-sectional study. The objectives of the study were
1) to explore health beliefs of methamphetamine dependent patients and 2) to examine
factors related to the completion of the treatment process. The samples of this study
were 452 patients receiving treatment at Thanyarak Institute. Questionnaires and
medical records review were used in the data collection process.
The average score on perceived susceptibility was 13.28 (total 7-21), while
the average score on perceived severity was 24.99 (total 10-30) , the average
score of perceived treatment benefit was 13.63 (total 6-18) and the average
score of perceived treatment barrier and cost was 14.09 (total 7-21). The average
score in treatment motivation was the highest at 17.14 (total 6-18). The research result
indicated that 63.7% of the samples were classified as having completed the treatment
process.
The results from multivariate analysis showed that sex, occupation, history of
incarceration, amount of methamphetamine used per day, system of treatment, and
methods of treatment were significantly related to completion of the treatment process.
Males were less likely than females to complete the treatment process (OR =0.42,P=0.010).
Government officers and company employee were also less likely than the unemployed
and general workers to complete the treatment process (OR =0.37, P=0.018). Patients
who had a history of incarceration due to other problems were less likely than those
without a history of incarceration to complete the treatment process (OR =0.18, P<0.001).
The patients who used a greater amount of methamphetamine per day were less likely
to complete the treatment process, as compared to those who used lesser amount (OR =0.93,
P=0.014). Regarding systems of treatment, it was found that those who were being
treated compulsorily were more likely to complete the treatment than those who were
being treated voluntarily (OR = 4.77, P=0.007) and those who were in the admission
treatment phase of rehabilitation were more likely to complete the treatment than those
who were in the detoxification phase (OR = 6.36, P=0.007).
Health beliefs and family support did not have a relationship to completion
of the treatment process. On the other hand, compulsion with control system should be
employed in the treatment process. More attention should be given to males and those
who have a history of incarceration or high amount of methamphetamine used per day
