Abstract:
Aging workers have health problems caused by physical degeneration and
decrease of androgen. Health promoting behaviors should be enhanced to ensure well
being and quality of life. This study aimed to explore the factors related to health
promoting behaviors of Thai aging male workers. The sample consisted of 280 male
aging workers aged between 4559 years old. Questionnaires were used for data
collection. Data were analysed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, chisquare,
pearsons product moment correlation, and stepwise multiple regression.
Results showed that most of the sample had overall health promoting behaviors
at a moderate level (57.4%). Considering each aspect of health promoting behaviors,
most of the aging male workers had health responsibility, stress management, nutrition,
physical activity, interpersonal relations and self actualization at a moderate level
(52.9%, 51.8%, 45.0%, 42.1%, 38.2%, and 29.6%, respectively) with the highest score in
behaviors related to self actualization and lowest in health responsibility. There were
significant relationships between age, health promoting activities in workplace, access to
health promoting information, availability of health promoting facilities, social support
from supervisors, friends, family, health care workers, media, and health promoting
behaviors (p-value < 0.05). The results also showed that attitude toward health promoting
behaviors, age, social support from supervisors, health promoting policy in workplace,
social support from family and media could altogether predict 25.0% of variance in
health promoting behaviors (p-value < 0.05).
The findings suggest that attitude toward health promoting behaviors should be
enhanced. The workplace should develop policy, promote it through various media and
encourage social support from supervisors and family to promote health behaviors of
Thai aging workers.
