Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to study factors affecting the decision to further
the pre-university education in music at upper secondary level. The selected target
populations are namely 447 students who study music with music clubs at their
schools, and those who study music with private music schools. The device used for
the research is a series of questionnaires created by the researcher. The number
derived from the reliability is 0.96; the data analysis is based on percentage, mean, and
standard deviation.
According to the research, it is discovered that the highly-much-leveled factors
affecting the decision are influence from friends and seniors, and the acknowledgement of
musical information (3.73), influence from teachers (3.73), and attitude towards the
attendance (3.67). The moderate-leveled factor is influence from parents or members
of the families (3.30).
The target populations who made a decision to further their studies in music
were influenced by their friends, seniors, and the acknowledgement of musical
information by recognizing the musical ability of their friends, and appreciation of the
musical performances of their seniors. As for the influence derived from teachers, they
hold fast to the teaching behaviors and good examples set by their own teachers,
whereas from parents or members of the families, the support gained from these
persons is considered a factor affecting the decision to further the studies in music. In
accordance with the attitude towards musical careers, the target populations would like
to further the pre-university education in music in order to take advantage of their
studies as the fundament to respectively go on to a musical field in higher education.
Additionally, it seems to the target populations that music is a subject in which they
are able to truly express their own ability and to achieve make fame.
