A study of the parenting related to game addiction
Abstract:
This study aims to study the level of game addiction and the relationship
between parenting styles and game addiction of level six primary school students in
Bangkok. It is done by gathering information from a questionnaire given to a sample
of 665 students aged from 10-13 years old in Bangkok. The data is then analyzed in
terms of frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Chi-square value.
The results illustrate that the students have a low level of game addiction.
There is a relationship between parenting styles and game addiction at a 0.01 level of
significance. Students who are brought up in both democratic and authoritarian
parenting have low levels of game addiction, at 79.6 percent and 59.6 percent
respectively. Those who are raised up with permissive parenting have a moderate
level of game addiction at 50 percent. There is a high level of game addiction for
neglected parenting, at 50 percent also.
Lastly, the researcher suggests family should pay attention to the importance
of parenting style and the relationship within family members to avoid inappropriate
behavior of children especially game addiction, which can be found at a high level in
Thai society.
