Abstract:
The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to evaluate the effectiveness
of a participatory learning program to promote health literacy in patient undergoing
liver biopsy at Siriraj hospital , Bangkok, Thailand.
The sample were selected on a purposive sampling basis on the basis of specific
criteria. The total samples of this study consisted of 39 patients undergoing Liver Biopsy.
Nineteen patients received the intervention and 20 patients served as comparison. The study
was conducted from September, 2007 until January, 2008. Self administered questionnaires
were used for data collection before and after interventions. Frequency, Percentage,
means, standard deviation, paired t-test, and students t-test were used for data analysis.
The study findings revealed that immediately after the experiment the experimental
group had statistically significant higher mean scores of health literacy than before the
experiment and also than those of the comparison group. The experimental group could
not decrease their anxiety. The experimental group had higher mean score of service
satisfaction but it was not statistically significant.
Based on this finding, it can be concluded that the participatory learning program
was effective to improve health literacy of patients who underwent liver biopsy. Therefore,
it is recommended that the participatory learning program should be used to promote health
literacy in other hospitals.
