Effect of pre-operative information by video on dental anxiety in school age children
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of providing pre-operative
information about details of operative procedures by video on dental anxiety reduction
in school age children.
Thirty-six child patients, aged between 6 and 8 years old, were scheduled for
sealant treatment. They were randomly divided into two experimental groups
according to the provision of pre-operative information. There were 18 children in
each group. The BV-group received basic information and the details of operative
procedures by video, and the B-group received basic information by oral explanation
only. The subjects dental anxiety levels were measured using the Facial Image Scales
(FIS) at three different times: pre-information, post-information/pre-treatment, and
post-treatment. Video observations of the subjects anxiety behavior levels while
receiving sealant treatment were measured using Venhams clinical ratings (modified)
of anxiety and cooperation behavior by two independent evaluators.
The results showed that there was a significant reduction in the state dental
anxiety score at the postinformation measurement in the BV-group (p=0.000). The
pre-treatment state dental anxiety score in the BV-group was significantly lower than
the B-group (p=0.000), and the dental anxiety behavior score during treatment in the
BV-group was significantly lower than in the B-group (p=0.022). However, no
significant difference was found in the post-treatment state dental anxiety score
(p=0.058).
In conclusion, pre-operative information with details of operative procedures
by video can reduce dental anxiety in school age child patients who undergo sealant
treatment, and it is also helpful in child behavior management for non-invasive dental
treatment.
