Abstract:
This research is to study what make pi-phat music exist in contemporary
urban life, using phenomenological approach. Three pi-phat ensembles were
selected as research informants; Sit-Ruangnon, Sphot Toesanga and Sawn-mechai
Roongruang. The pi-phat ensembles activities were observed and the semistructured
in-depth interview was used for to data collection.
The research results (elements and necessities supporting the survival of piphat
ensembles in Bangkok) are as follows. 1) The need for transmission of
ancestors because they are proud of their ancestors. 2) The pride of being a
musician and a child of the great master. 3) The need to show off their music
abilities. 4) The need to pass on Thai music to the next generation. 5) Method of
music knowledge transmission from masters to students and from students to their
pupils. 6) The quality control of music practicing. 7) Change and adaptation of
music presentation such as setting of ensemble, style of performance, musical style
and tuning systems. 8) Good manner of Thai musicians. 9) Good relationships
between musicians and surrounding people. 10) Change of attitudes and values of
music by listeners and employers of pi-phat ensembles. 11) Economic changes
affecting to people. 12) The pi-phat troupes method of management.
