Knowledge attitude and practice of heads of local administrative organizations on swine farms and pollution management : a case study of Muang district, Nakhonpathom province
Abstract:
This research aims to study knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of heads of
Local Administrative Organizations (LAO) on swine farms, pollution management,
problems and guideline for improvement. The sample consisted of 57 heads of LAOs in
Muang District of Nakhonpathom Province. Questionnaires and interviews were utilized
for this study. The SPSS programme was applied for data analysis. The statistics used
were percentage, mean, mode, standard deviation and chi-square test.
The results revealed that most LAO administrators had knowledge about the
authority, duty and roles of the LAO in natural resources, environment and pollution
management, and guidelines for environment-friendly swine farm management at the
intermediate level. Their knowledge was significantly related to length of service and
their social relations and membership of other organizations. Most administrators had
a positive attitude to swine farms and pollution management. Their attitude was
significantly influenced by work-position. The practice of most administrators about
swine farm management and prevention and improvement of pollution problems was
at the intermediate level. Their practice was significantly influenced by age and
activity/training/meeting/seminar participation. Also, the elected administrators had
knowledge and practice levels lower than the government appointed administrators,
but had more positive attitudes. There were correlations among the three factors.
Administrators who had greater knowledge had better attitudes and practice levels
than those who had less knowledge. The administrators who had a positive attitude,
had better practice than those who had negative attitudes.
There were five issues relating to appropriate management guidelines and
suggestions for swine farm management, prevention, and improvement pollution
problems: 1) increasing knowledge for the owners of swine farms and government
officers; 2) promoting regulation enforcement by both central and local governments,
3) continuing monitoring and surveillance of environment quality; 4) encourage the
set up of green swine farming networks; 5) increasing management efficiency
