Effects of continuing spouse involvement in breastfeeding promotion program for working mother on exclusive breastfeeding during first four months
Abstract:
The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to determine the effects of
continuing spouse involvement in the breastfeeding promotion program for working
mothers on exclusive breastfeeding during the first four months with their first
babies. The framework of this study was Penders Health Promotion Model. The
samples were working mothers with their spouses who participated in the activities
of the program for the promotion of continual breastfeeding from the third trimester
until their babies were 1 month old. These mothers brought their babies to the Well
Baby Clinic at Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Medical College and Vajira
Hospital. The sample group of 100 participants was selected by purposive sampling
and divided into 2 groups of 50 participants: the control group received only routine
nursing care and the experimental group included the participation of spouses in
order to promote the continual exclusive breastfeeding in addition to routine nursing
care. The data collection instruments included the demographic data questionnaire
and the breastfeeding questionnaire.
The results showed that the working mothers who had their first babies in the
experimental group had significantly longer exclusive breastfeeding duration than
the control group (14.04 weeks and 2.73 weeks, respectively, p < .001). The rates of
exclusive breastfeeding in the experimental group had significantly higher than the
control group (74 % and 4 %, respectively, p < .001).
Based on these findings, it is suggested that spouses should participate in
breastfeeding promotion programs, based on Penders Health Promotion Model,
starting from the third trimester until 4 months postpartum. By doing this, the
working mothers and their spouses will have correct knowledge, understanding and
positive attitudes with exclusive breastfeeding. The mothers will additionally
perceive self-efficacy in order to succeed in exclusive breastfeeding up to the
appropriate period.
