The effect of concrete-objective information on maternal anxiety of children undergoing cardiac catheterization
Abstract:
The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of
concrete – objective information on maternal anxiety of children undergoing cardiac
catheterization. The conceptual framework of this study is based on the self–
regulation theory of Johnson (1999). Fifty-four mothers were recruited from Queen
Sirikit National Institute of Child Health and randomly assigned into experimental and
control groups of 27 each. The experimental group received concrete–objective
information via multimedia computer which included explanations about the physical
sensations and symptoms that occur, temporal characteristics, environmental features,
and cause of sensations, symptoms and experiences of the mothers before and after
cardiac catheterization in children. The control group received routine nursing care.
The Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory Form Y-I was used for data collection to
assess maternal anxiety before the experiment (pre-test) on the first admission day, 1-2
hours before the cardiac catheterization (post-test-I), and 3-4 hours after the cardiac
catheterization (post-test-II). Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics,
independent t–test, and ANCOVA with pretest anxiety scores as a covariate.
The results revealed that the mean anxiety score of mothers in the
experimental group at 1-2 hours prior to the cardiac catheterization was significantly
lower than that in the control group (p<.01) and the mean anxiety score of mothers in
the experimental group at 3-4 hours after the cardiac catheterization was lower than
that in the control group with no statistical significance (p>.05).
These findings suggest that providing concrete–objective information via
multimedia computer can reduce maternal anxiety of children prior to cardiac
catheterization.
