Abstract:
This study was explanatory research aiming at evaluating the competency
of registered nurses in Phyathai 2 Hospital and factors having correlation with the
competency. The sample group included 153 registered nurses working in Phyathai 2
Hospital in the Surgery Department, Internal Medicine Department, Pediatrics
Department, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Delivery Room, Intensive Care
Unit, and Accident and Emergency Unit and had experience in those particular units
for 2 years. The data was collected by means of questionnaire conducted in October
2006 and analyzed by means of Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient
and Stepwise Regression Analysis.
The results showed that registered nurses had working experience in the
range of 3-6 years or 40.7%. And 94.7% of all registered nurses received the
supplementary nursing training. 71.3% had the professional and nursing values and
60% had the high levels of working motivation. Moreover, the study showed that self
assessment of registered nurses in Phyathai 2 Hospital had the high level of
competencies or 61.3% and personal traits such as working experience,
supplementary nursing training, and professional and nursing values were related
significantly at the statistic test level (p < 0.05) to nursing competencies. In according
Stepwise Regression Analysis illustrated that variation of registered nurses’
competencies were determined by working experience, working motivation, and
professional and nursing values at 62.8% (R2 = 0.628).
The suggestion from this study are the hospital exclusive level should
determine policy for working motivation, increasing working experience, increasing
supplementary nursing training, and adding professional and nursing values.
Moreover, the human resource development plan of the hospital should be set up
systematically to widen personnel’s working skills, which was another factor
affecting registered nurses’ competency
