Participatory learning program for aedes aegypti larva control among household representatives in Khlongsan district Bangkok
Abstract:
This was a quasi-experimental research study which aimed to study the effectiveness of
a participatory learning program for Aedes aegypti larva control among household representatives
in Kholongsan District, Bangkok. The program included activities for promoting knowledge
regarding breeding sources and Aedes aegypti larva control; promoting perceived susceptibility
and perceived severity of dengue haemorrhagic fever ; and promoting perceived self-efficacy in
controlling Aedes aegypti larvae. Participatory learning activities were organized with regard to
exchanging experiences, group discussions, using activities worksheets, posters, simulation
exhibitions, outdoor exhibitions, video tapes, demonstrations and practice. The study sample
comprised of 189 household representatives in Khlongsan District. There were 95 household
representatives in the experimental group who received a participatory learning program
developed for 16 weeks, and 94 representatives in the comparison group. The data were collected
using the interview schedule and Aedes aegypti larva survey from, before and after the experiment
and follow up steps. The data were analyzed by computing percentage, mean, standard deviation,
Student’s t-test, Paired samples t-test, and z-test, at the level of confidence of 95%
The results of this study showed that the experimental group had a significantly
higher level of knowledge regarding breeding sources and control of Aedes aegypti larvae,
perceived susceptibility, perceived severity of dengue haemorrhagic fever, and perceived selfefficacy
to control Aedes aegypti larvae than before the program and than the comparison
group. After the experiment, House Index and Container Index was significantly decreased,
and decreased more than the Indices of the comparison group.
From the results of the study, it can be concluded that the participatory learning program
was effective in improving behavior regarding Aedes aegypti larva control and eradication of
Aedes aegypti breeding sources. It is recommended that the participatory learning program should
be used to control Aedes. aegypti larvae in other similar areas.
