Evaluation of teaching package for self-care in persons with diabetes mellitus : a case study of a Bangkok Metropolitan hospital
Abstract:
This quasi-experimental study aimed at evaluating a teaching package for selfcare
in persons with diabetes mellitus. It was a case study conducted at a hospital
under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The sample consisted of 60 patients
with type 2 diabetes mellitus who received treatment at the diabetes clinic at a BMA
hospital. Simple random sampling was used to recruit the subjects of the study. The
teaching package for self-care in persons with diabetes mellitus consisted of ten selfcare
manuals and five video CDs with similar contents. During data collection, the
sample was divided into six groups, each composed of ten subjects, and data were
collected by means of the diabetes knowledge questionnaire administered before and
after the implementation of the teaching package. Also, the subjects’ opinions towards
the video CDs were elicited after watching them. In addition, the subjects received
ten manuals for self-study at home after they watched the video CDs. The researcher
conducted a follow-up every week, and an appointment was made with the subjects
during the fifth week to distribute the questionnaire on the satisfaction with the
manuals and to assess the subjects’ knowledge of diabetes mellitus after the
implementation of the package. Data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics
and paired t-test.
The findings indicated that the level of knowledge of persons with diabetes
after the implementation of the package was higher than that before the
implementation with statistical significance (p < .05). Moreover, the subjects’
satisfaction with the quality of the teaching package was at a very high level.
The findings of the study have led to the conclusion that the quality of the
teaching package for self-care in persons with diabetes is acceptable as it increased
knowledge of the persons with diabetes and it was also practical. Based on these
findings, it is recommended that the teaching package should be implemented in
healthcare centers to promote quality of nursing care and service provision
