The reletionships between family functioning and self-esteem early adolescents in Kanchanaburi province
Abstract:
The purposes of this research “The relationships between family functioning
and self-esteem in early adolescents in Kanchanaburi province” were 1) to Investigate
levels of self-esteem in adolescents; 2) to study six areas of family functioning:
problem solving, communication, family roles, affective responsiveness, affective
involvement and behavior control; 3) to study the relationships between family
functioning and self-esteem in early adolescents. The sample for this study consisted
of 409 adolescents who were studying in government secondary schools in Tamaka
district, Kanchanaburi province. They were chosen by using Stratified Random
Sampling. Questionnaires were used to collect the data.
It was also found that the family functioning and self-esteem had positive
relationships at a statistical significance level of .05. The strongest factor affecting the
relationships were the affective involvement while the second, third, fourth and fifth
were affective responsiveness, behavior control, family roles, communication and
problem solving, respectively. As for the self-esteem factors affecting the relationship,
school and schooling was the strongest factor whereas family and parents, social
status, general-self and peer group were the second, third, fourth and the fifth strongest
factors, respectively.
Based on the research findings, I recommend that the family should spend
more time together in order to strengthen the relationships. Apart from that, local
schools and government agencies should provide activities promoting the importance
and strength of the family.
